Our woodturnng bowl gouges are produced from premium M42 cobalt high-speed steel, chosen because of its superior wear resistance and edge-holding qualities compared to the more common M2. The heat treating process is accomplished with nitrogen in a vacuum chamber to prevent contamination. The steel is then tempered to achieve a hardness of 67-68 HRC yielding a very hard (but not too hard) material. The result is an exceedingly durable edge able to retain its sharpness for a long period of time. Our roughing gouge is milled form .765 M42 cobalt HSS with a ½” shank to fit a ½” socket.
All our flutes are individually inspected and hand polished to remove all machine marks. This extra step assures the sharpest cutting edge possible. They are shipped sharp.
