Our woodturnng bowl gouges are produced from premium M42 cobalt high-speed steel, chosen because of its superior wear resistance and edge-holding qualities compared to the more common M2. The heat treating process is accomplished in a vacuum chamber (to prevent contamination) followed by quenching in nitrogen. The steel is then tempered at 1000 degrees F in a nitrogen atmosphere to achieve a hardness of 66rc yielding a very hard (but not to hard) material. The result is an exceedingly durable edge able to retain its sharpness for a long period of time.
